General I²C Product Listing - View products
I²C is a popular multi-slave communications bus designed primarily to connect between low speed peripherals and microcontrollers. Texas Instruments provides a wide variety of I²C compatible interfaces and controllers.
I2C Logic
The inter-integrated circuit (I²C) bus consists of two active wires; the bidirectional serial data (SDA) line and the bidirectional serial clock (SCL) line.
PCF - The PCF8574 and PCF8574A provide an interface to most microcontroller families via the I²C bus for general purpose remote I/O expansion. With these devices, the SCL line is unidirectional, from the microprocessor to the device. The PCF8574 and PCF8574A are functionally the same, but differ in their I²C addresses. By using the PCF8574 or PCF8574A or both, circuit designers can greatly simplify complex glue-logic interface circuit, increase I/O pin-count, reduce PCB area used, and improve system reliability. View all PCF products.
PCA - The PCA9306 is a dual bidirectional I2C and SMBus voltage-level translator operational from 1.2 V to 3.3 V VREF1 and 1.8 V to 5.5 V VREF2. This device allows bidirectional voltage translations between 1.2 V and 5 V, without the use of a direction pin. The low ON-state resistance (ron) of the switch allows connections to be made with minimal propagation delay. When the enable (EN) is high, the translator switch is ON, and the SCL1 and SDA1 I/O are connected to the SCL2 and SDA2 I/O, respectively, allowing bidirectional data flow between ports. When EN is low, the translator switch is off, and a high-impedance state exists between ports.
The PCA9557 is an 8-bit I/O expander for the two-line bidirectional bus (I2C) designed for 2.3-V to 5.5-V VCC operation. This device provides general-purpose remote I/O expansion for most microcontroller families via the I2C interface (serial clock and serial data). The PCA9557 consists of one 8-bit configuration (input or output selection), input port, output port, and polarity inversion (active-high) registers. At power on, the I/Os are configured as inputs. However, the system master can enable the I/Os as either inputs or outputs by writing to the I/O configuration bits. The data for each input or output is kept in the corresponding input or output register. The polarity of the input port register can be inverted with the polarity inversion register. All registers can be read by the system master.

TCA - Designed to control LED’s via its I²C two line bus, the TCA6507 series of LED dimmers is ideal for processor based applications. Without this device, the microprocessor or microcontroller must be actively involved in turning on and off the LEDs (per the required dimming rate), which uses valuable processor time and the overloads I2C bus. The TCA6507 is optimized for a 1.65V to 3.6V voltage supply but the LED’s can be driven by any voltage up to 5.5V.
The TCA6408 is designed to provide general-purpose I/O expansion for most microcontrollers via the I²C interface. With an operating voltage range of 1.65V to 5.5V the expander is perfect for microprocessors and microcontrollers with low supply levels. Bi-direction voltage-level translation is also possible because of its wide operating voltage range.

The exponential growth in analog and digital IC's has created many incompatibilities between voltage supplies and logic levels. To alleviate these issues Texas Instruments has developed lines of logic level translators, level shifters, and voltage converters.
Voltage Level Translation
The simultaneous use of different supply-voltage levels on the same circuit board has led to the need for voltage-level translation. To have switching compatibility between a driver and receiver, the output thresholds of the driver must be compatible with the receiver input thresholds. Texas Instruments offers a full spectrum of products to achieve voltage-level translation. This includes a wide variety of devices: dual-supply level translators, FET switches, overvoltage tolerant devices, devices with TTL-compatible inputs and open-drain output functions. We offer the industry's broadest level-translation portfolio to meet all your level-translation needs.
