Microchip has announced its latest addition to its product line, the MPLAB® ICD3 In-Circuit Debugger! The all-in-one programming solution for Microchip flash products is a cost-effective, high-speed tool that supports in-circuit programming and debugging of Microchip's flash based 8-bit PIC® microcontrollers (MCUs) and its entire line of 16- and 32-bit MCUs and 16-bit dsPIC® Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs).

What is the difference between MPLAB ICD2 and MPLAB ICD3? While both in-circuit debuggers support all Flash-based Microchip devices, MPLAB ICD3 will support them at their specified processor speeds up to 80 MIPS for PIC32MX. Programming times are typically 15X faster than previous systems and inherits the Plug-and-Play connection to the target. It programs and debugs at several orders of magnitude faster than MPLAB ICD2 due to its hardware acceleration, high speed USB 2.0, and highly optimized debugging and programming techniques. The MPLAB ICD3 allows programmable programming voltage to the target over a much wider range than MPLAB ICD2, which provides functionality for some devices without the need of special adapters. The MPLAB ICD3 also has sufficient horsepower and capacity for code expansion already built-in, which allows it to keep up with faster, improved debugging facilities implemented into Microchip silicon devices which will provide a feature-rich development environment for customers.
